A score writing application called Sibelius was created and published by Sibelius Software Limited (now part of Avid Technology). It is the most popular music notation application in the world. Sibelius can play back the music using synthesized or sampled sounds in addition to writing, modifying, and printing music scores. It generates printed scores and has the option of making them accessible to others online. Several Sibelius add-ons and less sophisticated versions of the program have also been made available. Ben and Jonathan Finn, twin brothers, established the business in April 1993 to promote the Jean Sibelius-inspired music notation tool they had developed. Later, it created and released a variety of other music software applications, mostly for educational purposes.
